Royal Conservatory and The Glenn Gould Foundation Host Mariachi Festival Artistic Director Linda Ronstadt

On October 28, San Jose Mariachi Festival Artistic Director Linda Ronstadt will present the Glenn Gould Prize for the Celebration of Music to Dr. Jose Abreu, the founder of Venzuela's famed music education program, El Sistema. Ms. Ronstadt will present the award and participate on a panel on music education, at a conference orgganized by the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada. MHC CEO Marcela Davison Aviles will accompany Ms. Ronstadt and will also be a presenter at the conference, addressing the topic of culturally relevant music education programs and specifically MHC's mariachi education program.

Educational Workshops

The maestros from Mariachi Cobre return to lead music workshops in all of the instruments of the mariachi ensemble. They are joined by dance maestros Jose Tena and Maria Luisa Colmenares teaching workshops in ballet folklorico, conservationists and artists Bill and Athena Steen leading workshops on Mexican sustainable design and new this year -- chefs Toni Moore and Jenny Huston leading workshops on slow food Mexican cooking.

"Shakespeare on the Square" festival returns to the Theatre on San Pedro Square this June with Shakespeare?s magical comedy of fools, faeries and lovers: A Midsummer Night's Dream. In keeping with its multicultural themed presentations of Shakespeare's plays, this production sets the play in Piste, Mexico, reimagining the story in a "Telenovela" style with Mayan-inspired faeries and campesinos as mechanicals. A free, outdoor "Green Show" featuring traditional Mexican folk music, dance and love poetry will be presented one hour prior to Saturday and Sunday evening performances. A portion of the proceeds from each Friday evening performance will be donated to the Mexican Heritage Corporation to support its vital cultural, artistic and educational mission.

Come see our Mariachi Youth Program out in the community as mariachi and ballet folklórico students from San Jose High Academy perform at the Children's Discovery Museum's annual Celebration of El Día De Los Tres Reyes Magos.

CDM's event runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, January 10 and 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 11, but our students will only be performing from 3:45 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 10. So bring the whole family to celebrate the holiday, enjoy a great children's museum, and show your support for mariachi education in our public schools.

For its second concert of the season dedicated to "Passion, Romance and Drama", MCO will present a truly unique symphonic opera event in collaboration with Santa Clara University's Music Dept., Opera Cultura and the Mexican Heritage Corporation.

Frustrated lovers, thwarted plans, delightful comedy, tragic drama. This symphonic opera "double bill" has it all! Excerpts from Acts I and II of Mozart's comic romance, Marriage of Figaro, performed by SCU's Opera Workshop singers, are paired with San Jose composer Hector Armienta's bilingual opera about a woman in 1940's Texas who struggles against her culture's traditions and the spirit of the river as she pursues her dream for a better life. Those with Mexican roots will recognize the mythical Weeping Woman (La Llorona) in this orchestral premiere of River of Women with a cast of professional singers.

In this celebration of Mexican heritage, Patricia Garcia Torres, the internationally celebrated concert pianist from Mexico, will perform Leonard Bernstein's arrangement of Aaron Copland's El Salón México as well as works by Federico Ibarra, Manuel María Ponce, Claude Debussy, and Franz Liszt. Accompanying Ms. Garcia Torres will be celebrated author, playwright and director Luis Valdez, who will present a special reading, depicting Mexico's cultural evolution during that dramatic period of awakening, oppression and revolution. This exceptional combination of music and prose will be also feature a multi-media presentation produced by Kinan Valdez.

This is a call for submissions of audition tapes from interested Mariachi's and Folklorico dance companies in the area who wish to be considered for a contracted performance during the run of the festival. The Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli is a group composed of young people who love the traditions of their people expressed through music, songs, and dances characteristic of different ethnic groups. Wherever they perform, these talented dancers, singers and musicians provide a spectacular and colorful expression of the authentic folklore of México. In this special performance, Quetzalli will be joined by Mexican Heritage Plaza's own folklórico dance troupe, Los Lupeños de San José.

Mexican Heritage Corporation goes on the road
At the
Portland Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution

MHC is proud to announce a unique "virtual" performance by Los Lupeños de San José at the Portland Museum of Art on February 29, 2008 - a screening of the company dancing several selections from their repertoire at a special reception for museum donors and patrons. In addition, an artifact donated to the Smithsonian Institution's permanent collection by a member of the San José community is featured in the National Museum of American History's exhibition, "Treasures of American History" now on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The object, a farm worker's hat worn by Mexican guest worker Savas Castro, is one of more than 150 objects from the museum?s collection which will be on view through April 13, 2008 in the Treasures exhibit. An oral history of Castro's Bracero Program experience was heard and transcribed in a joint effort co-sponsored by the Mexican Heritage Plaza and the Smithsonian?s National Museum of American History.
