Mariachi Symposium: The Impact of Mariachi Music on American Culture

Join a panel of experts as they discuss the impact of Mariachi on the US today.  Panelists are Jonathon Clark; Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie Records; Hugo Morales of Radio Bilingüe, Fresno; Russell Rodríguez and Dr. Olga Nájera-Ramírez, University of California at Santa Cruz; Dan Sheehy of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings; Eugene Rodríguez, Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center; and Randy and Steve Carrillo, Mariachi Cobre.  This panel presentation is open to the public and free admission.

More than 400 students from all over the U.S. will attend master classes with professional mariachis including Mariachi Cobre, Mariachi Azteca, Jose Tena and Maria Luisa Colmenarez to perfect their technique and learn more about mariachi music and folkloric dance.

Mariachi Day at the Children’s Discovery Museum
Featuring Los Cenzontles, Grammy nominated Traditional Mariachi musicians

Spend the day at the Children’s Discovery Museum (an action-packed museum adventure for children of all ages!) and enjoy mariachi/folklórico workshops for young children and their parents presented by the staff and guest arts instructors of the Mexican Heritage Plaza.These workshops are scheduled to occur at 11am, noon, and 1pm in the Museum’s indoor theatre.

In support of the festival and thanks to a generous grant from FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, the Museum will be open free of charge from 10am – 8pm. Special activities throughout the day include traditional Mexican arts and crafts workshops in the Museum’s Art Loft, special youth Mariachi and Folklorico performances in the outdoor Amphitheatre, and music and rhythm activities for toddlers and preschoolers in The Wonder Cabinet.

At 3pm, the headliner Los Cenzontles will perform in the outdoor Amphitheatre. This well-known and popular Bay Area touring group presents a variety of traditional styles of Mexican music, ranging from tropical Sones Jarochos of Veracruz with dance and percussion to upbeat rancheras sung in the ever popular dueto style.

Feria del Mariachi and Mariachi Mass

Misa con Mariachi (Mariachi Mass) 9:30am at History Park followed by the Feria del Mariachi, a fun filled community festival for the entire family event with two stages of entertainment, food, arts and crafts and games in the 14 acres of the park.
