Curated by Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz and Dr. Allyson Purpurya, this is the first exhibition at the Mexican Heritage Plaza to focus exclusively on the visual culture of an African artist and his cultural traits in a Latino context.

The exhibition will include works produced both in Africa and the United States.  This exhibition seeks to raise issues related to contemporary themes of multiculturalism, Diaspora, identity, and language/cultural negotiation in the Bay Area.

Featuring a diverse range of objects, including traditional religious objects, printed magic scrolls, drawings, and paintings, the exhibition will chronicle the iconography of traditional Ethiopian painting, and the aesthetic of language.

The exhibition demonstrates the excitement of inclusive arts programming, tracing the transmission of images throughout Wosene Kosrof’s personal journey and mapping in detail their movement and exchange, so as to illustrate how powerfully he wrestles with questions of cultural belonging, memory and representation.
