Date: July 14 - 18, 2004

2004 festival theme, “¡Jalisco, no te rajes!” is a musical testimony to the unwavering pride and patriotism of the people of Jalisco. Jalisco is considered the birthplace of the Mariachi and is known for its expansive agave fields that produce fiery tequila, “ojos tapatíos” (“Guadalajaran eyes”—distinctively gorgeous eyes), el Jarabe Tapatío (the national dance of México), the charro, the traje de cintas (the brightly ribboned dress recognized internationally as the dress of Mexican Folk Dance), Puerto Vallarta, classical Guadalajara (its capitol city), the Huichol Indians who are virtually untouched by post conquest society, and distinctive pottery from Tonalá, Tlaquepaque, etc.
Festival dates are July 14 through 18. This year’s Festival encompasses three different concerts as well as student workshops, the Mariachi Mass and the all day festival. Headliners include Mariachi América de don Jesús Hijar—known as the Mariachi’s Mariachi (Mariachi Musicians the world over look to Mariachi America for their expertise), Mariachi Reyna de los Angeles, a premiere all-women’s mariachi from Los Angeles, vocalist Melinda and rising young star, Manuel Romero, both young talents who got their start here at the Mexican Heritage Plaza and are making their way to the top!
